According to the police a huge tree broke down in Lafayette on  Sunday Afternoon (21st January), that crushed several unoccupied cars in a parking lot.

Police officers responded at 4:30 p.m. to a report that a tree had come down at 101 Lafayette Circle. There are number of business in that area, including a famous Italian restaurant. A group was celebrating a woman’s 70th birthday in the restaurant which was just a foot from where the tree toppled.

Some people said that the sound was like a thunder.

A Pleasanton resident Janice Devine said that they heard the sound and thought it was thunder and lightning “Boom” just went over and it was fortunate that it went into the parking lot and not into the restaurant.

According to the reports no one was injured in the incident, but eight cars were brutally damaged and no building were damaged either.

A Jeep Wrangler was a mangled heap of metal which belonged to a woman, she was glad that nobody was inside any of the crushed vehicles.

"There were a ton of cars in this parking lot, and no one was in their car," Walnut Creek resident Jill Jones said. "Gladly everyone was super fortunate for being inside, and yes, we made it out all right."

Jones said she heard it was going to take at least 48 hours to remove the tree. Officials did not provide a timeline.

Deborah Roessler, of Martinez, was inside the restaurant celebrating her birthday.

It actually sounded like a thunder. But thank god no one was hurt, she said.
