Paris attacks: Lawyers for Salah Abdeslam 'will not defend him', Resign

Lawyers for Salah Abdeslam, the main suspect in last year's Islamist attacks in Paris say they will no longer defend him as he has chosen to remain silent. He is angered at being placed under 24-hour video surveillance, Frank Berton said.

“When someone is watching your comings and goings 24 hours a day with an infrared camera, even at night, it drives you crazy,” Mr. Berton said.

He said alongside fellow lawyer Sven Mary, that, "We said from the beginning that if our client remained silent we would quit his defence." “We simply cannot speak for a man who is keeping quiet,” Sven Mary said.

Magazine L’Obs reported, Mr. Berton said that, “Considering that for the last two interrogations, as well as the next one scheduled for the end of November, this man has chosen to withdraw into silence, my role ends.” “It no longer makes any sense.”

"The real victims of all of this are the victims of the Paris attacks, because they are entitled to this truth and they have the right to try to comprehend the incomprehensible," Sven Mary said.
